Artist with most #1 singles on the UK Singles Chart to date include:
-
Elvis Presley. The iconic American singer and actor has the most #1 singles on the UK Singles Charts. With as many as 21 number ones, Elvis Presley holds the record for more than 45 years, albeit jointly until the release of the 2002 remix of the song A Little Less Conversation by Junkle XL when he became the sole artist with most #1 singles on the UK Singles Chart.
-
The Beatles. The most successful English rock band in history holds the second place in the number of #1 singles on the UK Singles Chart but the four-man band from Liverpool shared the #1 with Elvis Presley until 2003. The Beatles also hold the record for #1 in years because as many as 17 singles topped the UK Singles Chart in only 6 years.
-
Cliff Richard and Westlife. British pop singer and Irish boy band that was active between 1998 and 2012 share the third place for most #1 singles in the UK as both produced 14. Cliff Richard first topped the UK Singles Charts with his 1959 song Living Doll (Written by Lionel Bart) which made it to #1 again in 1986 upon the release of a new version for Comic Relief. Westlife produced the same number of #1 singles as Cliff Richard but they were more successful than the latter in the number of #1 in years.
-
Madonna and The Shadows. The fourth place is shared by the most successful female solo artist in the number of #1 singles on the UK Singles Chart and “Queen of Pop”, and the British pop/rock group with a total of 69 chartered singles. Of these, 35 are assigned to The Shadows, while 34 are credited to Cliff Richards and the Shadows.
-
Take That. British pop group that was active between 1989 to 1996 and reunited in 2005 (Robbie Williams returned only in 2010) topped the UK charts with 11 singles, mainly during the 1990s. Internationally, Take That had over 54 number one hits. And considering that they announced recording of the seventh album in 2012, it isn’t excluded that they won’t move higher in the list of artists with most #1 singles on the UK charts in the future.
-
ABBA, Spice Girls and Kylie Minogue. Sixth place of artists with most #1 singles are shared by the internationally acclaimed Swedish pop group ABBA that was active from 1972 to 1982, the most successful British band since The Beatles and best selling pop group in history – Spice Girls, and the most successful female Australian singer Kylie Minogue.
